The larger the axial play, the worse the centering effect; a small play can cause the bearing to overheat. Additionally, domestic thrust bearings have poor precision, and after running-in wear, the play can become large. There are no management regulations on how long the running-in should last before readjusting the play. Excessive axial play leads to poor axial positioning, and since this unit is a reciprocating machine, it inevitably generates vibrations. If the amplitude reaches a certain value, it may impact and break the teeth.

The coupling diaphragm is in a compressed state, and the axial thrust of the high-speed shaft of the gearbox happens to push towards the coupling. Thus, the axial thrust is mainly borne by the coupling diaphragm, while the thrust bearing bears very little, or even no axial force, resulting in poor centering at the high-speed shaft coupling. When installing the coupling, a misalignment of 0.11mm is allowed, which is where the vibration source of the gearbox is generated. From years of gear damage observations, it has been proven that the damage occurs on the large gear compressor side, and before the modification, the coupling was removed using a hammer during maintenance, with a negative installation gap.

During the modification of the reducer, we considered the inventory spare parts, focusing on the coordination of sizes mainly on the retaining rings and bearing covers to ensure that the inventory spare parts can still be used. After the gear teeth are removed, an analysis should be conducted; it is not sufficient to simply find the cause of the problem in the affected area, especially at this stage where imported equipment spare parts mainly rely on domestic production, which may lead to issues due to the quality of other spare parts. Therefore, correctly identifying the cause of the failure and taking corresponding measures is very important and necessary for on-site maintenance personnel.
